Free to join. An friendly, informal writing community that runs a weekly short story challenge and other competitions.

Writer's Dock
Free to join. Formed after the closure of BBC GetWriting Writers Dock offers different forums for writers specialising in different areas (flash fiction, short stories, novels, scripts etc). Often features interviews with well-known authors where site members get to ask the questions

WriteWords
£35 a year (price correct Jan 2008). Offers a wide variety of resources including a searchable database of agents and agents, job opportunities and forums. Site Experts (published authors) regularly peruse the threads and often offer advice and guidance.

If you want to write stories for women's magazines this is your one-stop shop for guidelines, hints and tips.

Duotrope
A searchable database of print and ezine markets for short stories. Searchable by story length, genre, submission type etc

Jacqui Bennett's Writers Bureau
This is a fantastic site run by writer Jacqui Bennett. It includes a really comprehensive list of markets for short stories, non-fiction, articles, poetry etc. Jacqui also runs a short story competition four times a year and offers a full short story and novel critique service. The markets lists are free to peruse. There is a fee for the competition or any of the critique services.

FirstWriter

A fantastic site that lists lots and lots of fiction, non-fiction and poetry competitions in the UK, US and beyond. Search online or receive email updates whenever they receive details of a new competition. There's a monthly fee but it's not huge.
